Pokémon GO is a genuine, unique idea married to the perfect brand to bring AR gaming into the mainstream. If this sounds like doom and gloom, it's not really: those latter two parts of the game might be compromised, but the finding of the Pokémon is so irrepressibly fun that it's carrying the game at the moment. Developing a sense of attachment to your Pokémon has always been a big part of these games, but the revolving door in this iteration makes it hard to feel like that guy is your Squirtle. You're much more likely to just find new, higher level Pokémon out in the wild, which compromises the whole concept of improving the creatures you have.
You can raise their CP with stardust and evolve them with candies, but both take a long time, and the rewards never quite stack up with the effort. Training is barely there: your Pokémon are organized by "CP," a rough approximation of how they'll perform in any given fight. Luckily, the finding part is fun enough that it will carry the game a long way, but without some work on the rest of that loop the game is going to have a hard time with longevity. Right now, that loop is badly compromised. Pokémon has a simple gameplay loop built into its formula: find, train, and fight Pokémon. Pokémon GO's biggest problem is that it doesn't give the player much to do after a certain point. But while the technical issues are an annoyance, they're really just the beginning. It's an uptown problem: the servers are having trouble because of how massively popular the game is, and I expect people will easily stick it out as things get more stable.
